Light Up Your Life

Curated by lighting expert Caitlin Faron who designs primarily residential interior and exterior lighting. Her Water Mill company, Shine Design + Distribution, offers services from simple consulting to full-scale design and project management. “Light is a design element that should be considered along with the architecture.”

Café Society
This Brasserie Style Light reverts to a 1950s feel reimagined in a bright duck-egg blue finish. With its slight industrial feel and cheerful beach-y look, it lends itself to multiples over a kitchen island or breakfast table. It’s a nice way to introduce a crisp pop of color, especially since so many Hamptons kitchens are white. Available exclusively at English Country Home & Antiques in various sizes and finishes including white, brass and nickel.

Small and Sleek
The cool thing about this solid and beautifully made architectural cylinder from Lucifer Lighting is that it mounts to the ceiling without a visible canopy. Because of its 42-degree tilt and 357-degree rotation it can point straight down or at an angle.  A nice architectural element, it’s great for lighting artwork, in place of track fixtures or as an alternative to recessed lighting.

Plant a Seed
I love the sense of movement in this chandelier from Roll and Hill’s Seed Collection. Designed by Bec Brittain, it is very sculptural, irregular and different. The milky glass “seeds” diffuse light beautifully. I see it over a dining table, in an entryway or even the sitting room. Glass and brass, it comes in multiple sizes, configurations and finishes.

Double Feature
I like the double shade aspect of the Delta pendant from Rich Brilliant Willing. Each has its own texture. While the top shade is smooth the bottom shade sports box pleats in a modern interpretation of a traditional lampshade. The black version is almost entirely opaque but with its contrasting reflective gold lining casts a dramatic light. The all-white version is light, airy and casts a soft glow. The strong silhouette is made even more impactful by its scale, with larger ones measuring up to 32 inches.

Top of the Line
Having a linear fixture over a table or kitchen work zone is a great way to direct light across a long surface. A lot of these kinds of fixtures are contemporary, which can be cold. Being wood, the Camur LED Linear pendant from Cerno adds warmth. And that shimmy makes it look even more organic.  Designed by Nick Sheridan, it comes in an oiled and dark walnut, but it’s the oiled product with the visible wood grain that stands out.

Golden Newie
Since the Eclipse 1 LED sconce from Bruck Lighting with its concealed light source allows light to be directed both up and down it is perfect for a hallway or staircase. The modern look is offset by its golden reflector, which creates a warm glow that illuminates the wall from both sides of its elliptical body. Can be mounted vertically or horizontally. Also available in a brushed chrome exterior with a white inner reflector.
