Grey Gardens in Contract
Yikes! What would Big and Little Edie have to say about the $18 M last asking price of the derelict East Hampton mansion they called home? The storied estate was purchased from Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (relatives of Jackie O.), by famed columnist Sally Quinn and her late husband Ben Bradlee in 1979 for $220,000. They reportedly put $600,000 into its renovation.
The historic 1897 West End Road property, where Steven Spielberg is a neighbor, will be preserved by the new owners, Quinn told the Washington Post. While Quinn didn’t reveal the selling price of the buyer, she did tell the paper that she “burst into tears” when she got the offer. Not only had her husband written his memoir, A Good Life, they also spent “magical times” there.
When they bought the estate, the couple also purchased the Beales’ furniture, much of which will be sold at an estate planned by Quinn. We’ll be there!
