Built in 1877 by shipbuilders, the shingle-style cottage has stood for decades as a poignant reminder of the time when “summer colonists” settled the area. The three-story oceanfront Wainscott house has had a starring role in films such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Nanny Diaries.”

It was called Kilkare by its most recent owners, criminal trial attorney Michael Kennedy and his wife, Eleanora, who told the New York Times that the moniker was “meant to evoke a fictional Irish town, the sort of place where you could kill all your cares.” Her husband, who died last year, defended the Black Panthers. During the Kennedy’s tenure, the home played host to the likes of Peter Matthiessen, Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Dash, Candice Bergen and Billy Joel.

The structure, which boasts panoramic views of Georgica Pond and possesses 85 windows, nine fireplaces and wraparound porches, was in disrepair when the couple purchased it in 1975. Among other improvements, they added six bathrooms and converted the butler’s quarters to a kitchen. They left many original details including pumpkin pine floors.

The 2.8-acre property, located in the exclusive Georgica Association, is asking $55 M. Listed by Frank Newbold and Beate V. Moore of Sotheby’s, and Ed Petrie of Compass.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”18839″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”18840″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”18841″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”18843″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”18844″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”18846″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”18847″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_separator type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”18848″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_column_text]Photos courtesy of Sotheby’s International Realty[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
