Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s Manhattan Penthouse Finds Buyer

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s iconic Manhattan penthouse at 1120 Fifth Ave. is under contract after less than three weeks on the market, following a competitive bidding war. Listed for $9.95 million with monthly maintenance fees of $13,078, the final sale price exceeded the asking price, according to sources.

The Hollywood legends purchased the nearly 3,000-square-foot, two-bedroom prewar home in the early 1980s. Featuring two terraces totaling 2,300 square feet with breathtaking Central Park views, the penthouse served as their serene retreat, hosting glamorous parties for stars like Tom Cruise and Cher and even Presidents Clinton and Obama.

Designed by James E.R. Carpenter in 1925, the residence boasts original details such as 11-foot-high ceilings, herringbone wood floors, woodburning fireplaces, and a carved mantel. The layout includes a formal dining room, a spacious living room with terrace access, and a kitchen with a butler’s pantry and breakfast nook. The main bedroom offers two walk-in closets, an ensuite bath with hand-painted tiles, and its own terrace access.

Their youngest daughter, Clea Newman Soderlund, described the home as her parents’ oasis, where they enjoyed theater, opera, and dinner with friends. Woodward, now 94, lives in Westport, Conn., while Newman passed away in 2008.

The penthouse, on the market for the first time in over 40 years, is being sold by their daughters. A second two-bedroom apartment on the ground floor, previously used as office and still owned by Woodward, is also available for purchase.

Newman and Woodward, both Oscar winners, are remembered not only for their storied Hollywood careers but also for their philanthropy, including founding the SeriousFun Children’s Network and Newman’s Own Foundation.

Listed by Noble Black and Jennifer Stillman of Douglas Elliman, this extraordinary property represents a rare piece of New York history. “With its high ceilings, grand rooms, fireplace and large terrace perfectly centered on the Jackie Onassis Reservoir, it is one of the best penthouses on Fifth Avenue – and that’s before you consider its platinum pedigree of former owners,” Black told HRES recently.
