“Tenants are securing Hamptons rentals at a steady rate,” says Chris Chapin of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. In fact, the market is so active that Angela Boyer-Stump of Sotheby’s International Realty believes “we will have a banner rental season.” She has also witnessed many prospective home buyers that are renting for a month or so to search for a home.
The bitter weather at the beginning of winter led to more virtual visits and sight-unseen deals. “People were holed up in their apartments shopping for rentals and making the deals on their iPads,” says Chapin.
Over at Town & Country Real Estate they’ve written 20 leases more than last year at this time. “I hypothesize that people are feeling better about their overall economic future,” says firm head Judi Desiderio. “And missed spending their summer out east. We’re happy to have them back.”
But not all is hunky-dory. Chris Burnside of Brown Harris Stevens has been hearing from landlords that they are renting out their homes for short periods (Think: VRBO) on their own. What this means? Full season rentals are scarce. “I would advise anyone who needs extended or full season residences to start their search now,” says Burnside.
Here’s a list of summer rentals to make you the envy of your friends.
