The Hamptons Are Alive with Sound this Summer

What better way to spend some warm summer days and cool summer nights in the Hamptons than listening to great music at the theaters, clubs, and other venues. As August arrives, the sounds of summer can be heard from Westhampton Beach to Montauk as live musicians perform all across the Hamptons. From classical to pop, rock to jazz, and other genres, here are some of the musical highlights in the Hamptons and Montauk through the end of summer.

The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (WHBPAC) in Westhampton Beach, features many great concerts this summer, among them Saturday, August 8 at 8 p.m., Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist Boz Scaggs, known for his blues, R&B, rock, and jazz. After his time with the Steve Miller Band, he broke out with the multi-platinum release, Silk Degrees. Now four decades later, Boz’s highly anticipated new album, A Fool to Care, is about to be released. On Saturday, August 15 at 8 p.m., hear Jazz and R&B icon George Benson, NEA Jazz Master and ten-time Grammy Award-winner, who redefined the world of jazz with his first platinum jazz album in 1976. Recognized as one of the most remarkably versatile guitarists in jazz history, he is equally admired for his soulful tenor R&B vocal style. For ticket information visit www.whbpac.org.

Southampton Cultural Center (SCC) will sponsor a popular series of free summer concerts in Agawam Park and at Coopers Beach, mostly on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Concerts in Agawam Park include Saturday, August 1, Center Stage at Sunset: An Evening of Cherished?Broadway Melodies; August 5, Adlib Steel Orchestra; Tuesday, August 18, The Nancy Atlas Project; August 19, The Hoodoo Loungers; August 26, Mambo Loco; and September 2, Rhonda Denét. On August 12, listen to Just Sixties at?Coopers Beach.

The Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival (BCMF), led by New Zealand-born flutist and Artistic Director Marya Martin, who with her husband began the festival in 1984, features a Summer Season of concerts with about 40 renowned musicians from around the world, who come to the Hamptons to perform together in a unique lineup of events, most at 6:30 p.m. August 1 is their Annual Benefit at the Atlantic Golf Club. Then at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church enjoy on August 2, Bach & Mendelssohn; August 5, Beethoven’s “Archduke” at 7 p.m.; August 9, Precise Passion; August 16, Schubert’s “Trout”; August 19, Innocence Lost at 7 p.m.; August 22, Saturday Soiree: An Evening of Solo Bach; and August 23, A Starry Night. On August 10, BCMF will be at the Parrish Art Museum playing an all American program: Deep Rivers, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights marches; and on August 14 at 6 p.m., hear the Wm. Brian Little Concert, as Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame performs Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale at Channing Sculpture Garden. For ticket information, visit www.bcmf.org.

In August at the Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, listen to free jazz on Twilight Thursdays at the Winery Tasting Room from 5-8 p.m. Enjoy wines, cheese and charcuterie plates for purchase, and relish the view of the vineyard as the sun goes down. On Sunset Fridays & Saturdays enjoy free live music at the Wine Stand at the Montauk Highway outpost from 5 p.m. to sunset. Bring a blanket and savor wines, cheese and charcuterie plates for purchase, and watch the gorgeous sunset over the vineyard. Among the many concerts are: Friday, August 21, The Greg Smith Group; and Saturday, August 29, Mamalee Rose and Friends.

At The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, enjoy music nightly all summer long. Special highlights include Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8 at 9 p.m. featuring The Bogmen, an indie rock band from Huntington, NY, formed by Billy Campion, Bill Ryan, Brendan Ryan, Mark Wike, P.J. O’Connor, and Clive Tucker in 1993. Despite breaking up in 1999, they have reunited several times in order to raise money for charity. On Sunday, August 9 at 8 p.m. hear Grammy Award-winning reggae band Steel Pulse. Formed at Handsworth Wood Boys School in Birmingham, England in 1975, they have been true to their roots for over 35 years. “Without love there is no justice, and without justice there is no peace,” says founder David “Dread” Hinds. “At the core of our music is a deep sense of love for our African heritage, and a commitment to fight for justice for all people on this planet, even for our planet itself.” Also Monday nights are open mic nights at 10 p.m. (except Monday, August 17). In Montauk, enjoy Sunday’s at Gosman’s Dockside Stage from 6-8 p.m. featuring the following free concerts in August: 2, Lynn Blue and the International Men of Mystery; 9, Randy Jackson; 16, Mamalee Rose and Friends; 23, The Nancy Atlas Project; and 30, The Hoodoo Loungers.
On Monday nights, enjoy Monday Night Concert on the Green sponsored by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, from 6-8 p.m. in August featuring the following free concerts: 3, The Feinberg Brothers; 10, The Nancy Atlas Project; 17, Mike Rusinsky and Friends; 24, Job Potter and Friends; and 31, Hopefully Forgiven.

Relax to free live music on Sundays from 1-6 p.m. at The Sloppy Tuna featuring in August: 2, Project Vibe; 9, David Higgins; 16, Oogee Wawa; 23, Cabana Fever; and 30, TBD, or watch a beautiful sunset and hear free live music at The Montauket. Experience The Surf Lodge, a popular nightspot with free live music and great ambiance in the summer, featuring among others in August: 8, Delta Spirit; 16, Donavon Frankenreiter; and 27, Mercedes Escobar & Ishto Juevez.

The Hamptons is hopping with music this summer. From the WHBPAC to The Stephen Talkhouse, from the parks to the vineyards, great music can be heard everywhere. The Hamptons and Montauk will be buzzing with sound this summer!
