From the shores of the North Fork or from a boat traveling the Peconic River from the bay to the sound, a grand white structure sits peacefully atop a hill for all to see that pass by. A steep and lush green lawn spans the front of the building, while large trees shroud the surrounding property. It’s hidden away and protected by the surround waters of Shelter Island, with access granted to those who drive along Shore Road or arrive by boat to one of two docks. This is the Pridwin Hotel.
For nearly a century, this American resort spanning ten acres on Crescent Beach has some of the most beautiful sunsets that just don’t seem to feel as magical anywhere else. Dubbed a Gatsby-era hotel, the Pridwin has become a prime location for weddings and other celebrations, weekend getaways, or even just a visit for lunch and dinner.
Chef Swainson Brown’s cuisine marries the tastes and flavors of both land and sea on the second level dining room overlooking the water. Touting elegant, rustic, and honest food, Pridwin menus include tuna burgers with roasted tomato, olive aioli, and lettuce; smoked brisket sandwich with barbecue sauce and spicy cucumber pickles; and of course an area favorite, fresh lobster roll with fine herbs, house-made pickles, and truffle mayo for lunch.
A draw for many on both the North and South Forks, and Shelter Island residents, is the Wednesday night cookouts. Arrive by land or by sea, and enjoy live music, beer and wine, and an all-you-can-eat cookout menu on the lawn. Steamed clams, mussels, and fresh shrimp alongside grilled marinated tuna, smoked pork spare ribs, and barbecue beef kalbi ribs are just a few of the mouthwatering dishes to expect. Deliciously popular, reservations are strongly recommended as these events are a sellout nearly every week.
Enjoy an intimate evening of jazz on Tuesday nights this summer as well in the dining room. The regular dinner menu is available nightly, with mouthwatering dishes like slow cooked salmon with potato puree, asparagus, oven roasted tomato, and shallot vinaigrette, or coriander-thyme crusted tuna with eggplant caviar, onion tart, and nicoise vinaigrette. You could always opt for that amazing lobster roll too. A thoughtful wine list and specialty cocktails complement every meal night and day.
For the weary traveler, or the staycationer, one of 40 rooms in the hotel or a stay at one of the nine cottages will have you feeling world’s away. Steal away to serene Shelter Island and discover the delights of dining at one of the oldest running establishments on the East End.
