Broker Showcase – Matt Austin

Hampton’s Real Estate Showcase Magazine chats with Douglas Elliman’s Matt Austin on his selling style and what he likes to do in the Hampton’s…

Q: With all your talents what made you choose real estate?
A: After ten years as a director on the corporate side of real estate, it was a natural move to the brokerage side of the business. Having first hand knowledge of real estate marketing, technology, and sales has been a huge asset.  Also, how to maximize the firm’s resources has been great for my clients. There are so many amazing things our company has to offer, and taking advantage of them is key to an effective marketing plan.

Q: Can you tell us about some of your more notable sales?
A: I just sold my own property last week in 6 days with a bidding war! I took my own advice that I usually reserve for my sellers. 1. Price it right. 2. Stage it for how you would like to buy it. 3. Get the best professional photographs possible. (One person bid on it sight unseen, right off of the photos) When you combine all of those things together, it gets you great results.

Q: How would you describe your selling style?
A: I was once told by a wise man that “the best two sales tools you have are your ears.” My style is to listen and understand what the client really wants. Having great business relationships, and providing smooth transactions is also part of it, and by taking the “sell” out of the equation, deals get done. Give people what they want… period!

Q: What do you like to do for fun in the Hamptons…after selling real estate, of course?
A: Anything relating to water. It’s no secret that we have the best beaches and waterways. The challenge is trying to get it all in during the short season. Too bad summer isn’t 11 months out of the year!

Q: What is the most challenging aspect of being a real estate broker?
A: People don’t realize how hard the good brokers work. It takes a 7-day work week ethic to be successful, and you have to be ready at any given moment, because when you least expect it, that’s when deals happen!
