Antiques Maven Guts Historic Southampton House

After all, the mega-rich entrepreneur loves old things — from the antiques sold on his highly successful site to the estate he renovated in Tuxedo Park. Not only that, he rented an historic carriage house on Gin Lane from which to oversee renovation of the Coopers Neck home.  He is a self-proclaimed “real estate junkie,” according to the NY Post.

What was a surprise was the extent of the demolition of the 14,000-foot structure, designed by prominent turn-of-the-century architect Grosvenor Atterbury in 1910. As one wag put it: “It was gutted down to its rafters.” Another Southamptonite, who held her wedding reception there a few years ago, was stunned that “all that’s left are the walls.”

The rambling mansion, formerly boasting 11 bedrooms, 13 baths, 9 fireplaces and sweeping staircases, sits on three beautifully landscaped acres where the owner hosted a cocktail party this past weekend for noted Greenwich Village dealer Benoist F. Drut of Maison Gerard. Drut staged the alfresco show to feature the Corten and steel sculptures of late Italian architect and sculptor Marino di Teana against a backdrop of exquisite gardens.
