Realty Check – Hot Sales & Listings…

Helmut Lang selling?

While it hasn’t been made official yet, multiple reports have been made that fashion designer and Austrian artist Helmut Lang is going to be listing his oceanfront Hamptons home for a whopping $100 million. The address has not been revealed by any sources, but the New York Post reported that the oceanfront compound comprises close to 4 and 5 acres of land and includes a nearly 9,000-square-foot main house with five beds and seven baths, a guest cottage, and a studio.

Albee Sells by the Seashore

The oceanfront Montauk home of late Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winner Edward Albee has officially passed on to another, equally iconic, realm. Reportedly purchased by American design legend Ralph Lauren, the 2.8-acre parcel — which includes a 2,100-square-foot main house, guesthouse, pool house, pool, tennis and hundreds of trees planted by the “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” writer — listed for $20 million and sold for $16 million. Lauren, who already owned property on either side of the estate, has kept mum about the sale so far, which benefits the Edward Albee Foundation. Paul Brennan of Douglas Elliman represented the property.

Broadway Star’s Beach Shack

The property of another late legend is now up for sale, to the tune of $14.995 million. Famed choreographer, director, dancer and theater producer Jerome Robbins’ Dune Road beach cottage is being offered for the first time in 40 years. Built in 1950, the 1,100-square-foot, shingle-style bungalow features 118 feet of beach frontage, ocean views from every one of its eight rooms, wraparound decks, pool, private path to the water, and a remarkable stone fireplace. Zoning allows for it to be torn down and replaced with a 6,000-square-foot mansion, but let’s hope at least part of it remains, for posterity’s sake. Even if the house doesn’t survive, Robbins’ artistic legacy certainly will. The numerous stage productions the Academy Award-, Tony Award-, and Emmy Award-winner worked on included “On the Town,” “Peter Pan,” “The King and I,” “West Side Story,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Gypsy” and “The Pajama Game.” Represented by Martha Murray, Marilyn Clark and Frank Newbold of Sotheby’s, proceeds from the sale will benefit the Jerome Robbins Foundation in support of the performing arts.

Ballet Pays

The waterfront Bridgehampton home of ballerina Sono Osato, who passed away last year at the age of 99, is now in contract. Represented by Deborah Srb of Sotheby’s International Realty, the prestigious $34 million Quimby Lane home comprises just under 4 full acres, 300 feet of Sagg Pond frontage, 7,200-square-foot residence with five bedrooms, six-and-two-half baths, tennis and pool. The Japanese American performer, who was just 14 when she joined the Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo, also danced with the American Ballet Theatre and played Ivy Smith in the inaugural production of “On the Town,” which was choreographed by Water Mill’s Jerome Robbins. The original Miss Turnstiles, a beauty-contest promotion that the New York transit system, she later went on to earn the Donaldson Award for her performance in the 1943 show “One Touch of Venus,” with Mary Martin, and also acted alongside Frank Sinatra in “The Kissing Bandit.”

Filmmaker’s Final Bow

The property of British filmmaker Anthony Harvey has sold and closed for $2.6 million in Water Mill. Located on just shy of an acre on Kellis Pond, the 1,792-square-foot, three bedroom residence was Harvey’s home until he died in November 2017. Though Harvey wasn’t necessarily a household name, his body of work is nevertheless quite impressive. He earned a Directors Guild of America Award for directing Katharine Hepburn, Peter O’Toole and Anthony Hopkins in “The Lion in Winter,” and edited both “Lolita” and “Dr. Strangelove” for Stanley Kubrick. With close to 30 movies under his belt as director or editor, the celebrated filmmaker got his start in the business as a young actor, playing Ptolemy to Vivian Leigh’s Cleopatra in the 1945 film version of “Caesar and Cleopatra.”

Hollywood and Wine

Cutchogue’s Bedell Cellars is now on the market for $18 million after the March passing of its owner, movie mogul Michael Lynne. The film executive — who had helmed New Line Cinema and is widely regarded to be one of the key people to convince filmmaker Peter Jackson to develop the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy into a series instead of a single epic movie — was also a farmer at heart, and a wine lover to boot. His North Fork property spans more than 95 certified-sustainable acres, 75 of which are covered in 10 different varieties of vines; a 309-year-old, 1,825-square-foot main house, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and comes with interiors by Vicente Wolf and landscaping by Ed Hollander; a guest house; 10,000-square-foot winery; 4,000-square-foot event space; and apple orchard, among other notable amenities. Gary DePersia of Corcoran holds the listing.
