Since opening its doors in the ’90s, the Montauk Library has not had any major expansions or renovations. As a result, the building has leaking windows, isn’t up to hurricane standards, and lacks handicap access. Earlier this month, the library announced that the issues will be fixed with a $7.5 million expansion plan.
The programs have been increasing in numbers and attendance, and the library has doubled its hours since first being built. According to 27east, the total 20-year cost of renovation will cost the average Montauk homeowner about $80 per year.
Plans include tripling the size of the kids’ and teens’ section, increasing the total square footage, and adding a 1,600-square-foot entry with a local history exhibit. There will also be a new archival room in the basement, new bathrooms, and eco-friendly green features such as a “green roof”.
