Hot Sales & Listings…With A Dollop Of Gossip by Zoe Langstrom

The One That I Want

The modern glass-and-wood Sagaponack oceanfront palace used in a commercial for Chanel No. 5 has been listed for sale. The ad – really more a short film – helmed by acclaimed director Baz Luhrmann (known for such works as Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby), features supermodels scampering about the Bates Masi-designed 10,000-sf manse with 300 feet of ocean frontage. The nine-bedroom, 10.5 bath edifice is “by far the most spectacular house I’ve seen, and I’ve been doing this a long time,” according to listing agent Susan Breitenbach of Corcoran.

Coastal Living Showhouse

Coastal Living is hosting its first Hamptons show house in a 6,800 square-foot home at 272 Brick Kiln Road in Bridgehampton. Renowned designer, Meg Braff worked with award winning Fred Throo Architects and Touch of Grey builders to design a house “filled with seaside style, bold colors, design tips and more.” According to the magazine’s editor Steel Marcoux, “You’ll see one of our favorite design trends, the revival of vintage wallpaper patterns.” Visitors can check out the stunning space through September 4.

Kelli Delaney of style blog KDHamptons curated an open house for Bay Bluff, a new bay-front listing by Tim Davis and Thomas Davis of Corcoran. Power brokers gathered at the three-level structure atop a 40-foot bluff to sip rosè while enjoying the expansive views of Shinnecock Bay, Meadow Lane and the ocean beyond.

Not a Laughing Matter

Preservationist Sally Spanburgh has sent out an email beseeching readers to save Laffalot, one of the original eight Dutch Colonial Revival cottages in Southampton’s Art Village. All but one of the residences, built in Shinnecock in the 1890s to house artists attending William Merritt Chase’s school, are still intact (one was razed in the ‘50s.) As Chair of the Southampton Landmarks & Historic District Board, Spanburgh’s appeal was in response to a demolition application from the current owner. While the board cannot deny the application, the hope is that with an outcry the owner’s mind will be changed. Letters can be sent to
[email protected]. Eccentric former owner Zella De Milhau will smile down at you from above.

Breitenbach_Gossip feature1Price Cut

Hollywood producer and house flipper Sandy Gallin, who managed the careers of Michael Jackson, Cher, and Barbra Streisand among others, has lowered the price on his exquisite Further Lane compound. The pastoral 2.11-acre spread, which has languished at $24.5M for quite awhile, is now asking $22.5M. Listed by Linda Haugevik of Douglas Elliman. Perhaps someone will finally take possession the magical spot with its four outbuildings and apple orchard.

Fashionable Rental

Rory Tahari, Elie’s ex, is renting out the Sagaponack house she got in the divorce settlement. It’s the first time the oceanfront abode has been made available. The open-plan space boasts a much-published great room with high-beamed ceilings. Other features include a room-size shower, six-person tub and panoramic views of 250 feet of beachfront. The interior’s rustic aesthetic is the work of designer Tom Flynn. It’s listed at $450,000 for July and $800,000 for the summer, not including houseman. Listed by Keith Green of Sotheby’s, who happens to be Rory’s father.

Tear Down

Hedge fund billionaire Steven A. Cohen has razed his 10,000-square-foot house at 52 Further Lane for which he paid $62.5M in 2013, the year his firm SAC Capital Advisors was busted for insider trading. Not to worry, while he builds his new place he can always stay at his other Further Lane residence. Hopefully it’s up to his standards. He paid a mere $18M for it.

Alley Oop

Jason “Jay” Williams, the former point guard for the Chicago Bulls, has rented a midcentury modern five-bedroom/five-bath home in Northwest Woods for August. Listed by Saunders at $65,000, the 3,450 square-foot house comes with five en-suite bedrooms and 5.5 baths, master bath with walk-in shower and soaking tub, and movie theater.

Empire Building

In June Town and Country Real Estate held a bash to celebrate their new Montauk office on Carl Fisher Plaza. After more than half a century in business, Montauk’s Pospisil Real Estate was sold to Town and Country this winter. Having been asked over the years to sell, Pospisil owner Marge Harvey finally agreed to sell to Judi Desiderio, Town and Country’s CEO – both because Desiderio is a friend and because she agreed to keep on all 10 Pospisil agents. Besides Montauk, the firm has offices in East Hampton, Southampton, Bridgehampton, Westhampton Beach, Southold and Mattituck.

Name Change

The folks at tee-shirt company Local Knit have rebranded, officially changing their name to Montauk Mainstay. “Montauk Mainstay was born out of nostalgia for fluke fishing on the Lazybones with my dad and brother, early morning coffee and egg sandwiches from the Bake Shoppe, and family lobster roll dinners at Duryea’s,” writes proprietor Peter Moore. The company produces branded apparel for such iconic local Montauk businesses as Duryea’s (which sports a lobster graphic) and the Shagwong (an Indian headdress), but has expanded this year to include Joni’s, Navy Beach, Surf Club (not Surf Lodge) and Stephen Talkhouse. Moore has also launched a new online store to purvey items for men, women and kids, as well as accessories and “some great photography.” The site is also home to Mainstay Journal, a compendium of “some cool Montauk content.”

Lord of the Manor

For the aspiring landed gent, a 30-acre estate in the heart of Hamptons horse country has become available. With panoramic vistas over rolling fields and the ocean beyond, this 8-bedroom/7.5 bath residence was custom-built by Bulgin & Associates. After a drive along a winding driveway, enjoy a welcoming reprieve under the gracious portico. The English country feel extends to the stone-stacked fireplaces, and paneled library. Listed by Debbie Loeffler of Corcoran for $14.8M.
