Family + Business = Success

Moving is a process that can be stressful unless you find the right moving company. My family and I just moved and from personal experience, hiring a reputable company like Liberty Moving was the right choice. I was so happy with their level of service that I offered to interview Anthony Federico, one of the owners who handles the residential side of the family business.

What is the business philosophy of Liberty Moving? Honesty, integrity and reliability are the principals we have built the company on and what sets us apart from the rest. What differentiates us is that all of our crews have extensive criminal background checks and drug testing completed prior to stepping foot in your home. We also have extensive training for our crews. We are not selling a product, we’re selling a service, our people. There is nothing more personal than moving all of your priceless possessions from NYC to the Hamptons or around the world. The most important part of any move is the crew. We must deliver unconditional trust while they are in your home and caring for your possessions.

Tell us a little about the history of Liberty Moving? Liberty was started in 1939 by my grandfather Michael Federico in Jamaica Queens on Liberty Ave.—hence our company name. My father Mike Federico Jr. joined the company after serving in the military during the Vietnam War, and brought in his brother-in-law Tom Aleo as his partner. After WWII there was a huge demand for new homes from returning GI’s and the mass migration of people moving from NYC to the suburbs of Long Island, during which Liberty grew and flourished. In the Mid 90’s I joined the company, as well as my brother Michael Federico III. We split the company into 2 divisions, commercial and residential, and made each our own.

What is the secret to Liberty Moving’s longevity? Only 30% of companies make it to the 2nd generation, 13% to the third, and only 3% make it beyond. My father has done an excellent job of succession planning and consistently pushing us to be the best in our fields. Working with family is not easy, some holidays have not been fun, but you know you can trust each other to do what’s best for our future. This is why we are celebrating our 76th anniversary this year and the company has consistently grown even through the past housing market collapse.

Is there anything you won’t move? Yes, we can’t move plants into certain states. The Dept. of Agriculture will not allow the transfer of certain insect species and customers are always upset to learn they can’t take their beloved house plants to CA. No perishables or flammables of course. We have moved a couple of cats that would hide in box springs or furniture, only to be found to the customer’s surprise at their new destination.

Have you ever moved anyone famous? Absolutely. Because of our market stretching from NYC to the Hamptons we have moved many celebrities, CEO’s of Fortune 500’s and politicians, some of whom I can’t mention. One that I can (and one of my favorites) was Britney Spears, who we moved from NYC to Malibu, CA. I was so impressed with how hard she worked and not surprised why she is so successful. She actually was moving boxes and unpacking with me and my crew.
