Page Glatt has a background in journalism and has written extensively on the topics of her field, which helps her in the process of working and communicating with a diverse array of clients looking for different things. By gathering as much information as possible, including how clients see themselves using a space, what their needs are, and what their lifestyle entails, conversations can answer important questions like determining the type of furniture, fabric used, and carpet choices. For example, a dog and white carpet often don’t mix, she says.

“Sometimes clients don’t even know what they need but when you talk through it, they’ll discover something,” Page Glatt explains. “I use an extensive questionnaire which identifies the family’s wants and needs, use of the space, style and color preference, etc. The more information I have, the better the design I can provide my client. Good communication is the key to a great interior designer-client relationship.”

Another important design aspect Page Glatt shares that clients can sometimes overlook is scale. Someone may see a sofa that looks beautiful in a showroom, but when it comes to their own living spaces it may be too large and will overwhelm the space or not make sense with other parts of the design. It is an easy mistake to make a purchase based on the personal preference of a piece alone. Working with a professional that has a trained eye for space results in a floor plan that puts the right furniture in the room while taking into consideration other crucial elements such as color palates.

The idea of the Hamptons season has extended far past the summer months in recent years, though design at times can feel limited if a space was created in the style of just one time of year. Second homes for example aren’t just used for trips to the beach anymore. However, Page Glatt shares there are some simple ways to make your Hamptons home welcoming for fall.

“Many rooms that look cool and sophisticated in the summer suddenly feel sterile in the cooler fall months,” Page Glatt explains. “The easiest way to update your environment for the fall is with accessories. Switch out or add to your sofa pillows with luxe velvets or mohair and add a cozy cashmere or chunky blanket for an instant fall update. Layering is important: use different textures to add depth and interest to your room.”

For rooms with neutral summer shades, adding a pop of color can be a welcomed upgrade. Warm fall colors like pumpkin and toasty browns are another suggestion, as well as deeper coastal colors like navy and darker grays that still work to create welcoming beach vibes even when temperatures drop. “Switch out your table top accessories too,” Page Glatt continues. “Soft copper and sophisticated rose gold are trending accent colors that will add warmth and glamour to your room. Consider adding a vase or object in one of these metallics to your cocktail table for instant fall glamour.”

Exteriors in the Hamptons are eclectic, as are the interiors Page Glatt designs. In terms of architecture, the most recognized style is the traditional shingle-style home. Signature gambrel roofs, long verandas, and solid interior woodwork are some of the defining characteristics of these classic abodes. Living and working in the Village of Southampton, and also having built and renovated a few homes herself, Page Glatt considers how different styles complement one another to meet today’s needs. Her own home, built nearly 15 years ago, is of the classic Hamptons style.

“I made sure we included both a columned side porch and screened in porch for hot summer days,” Page Glatt shares. “The interiors feature paneled walls and coffered ceilings and a small powder room beneath the stairs. It’s a fun folly! These design features make the home feel like it’s been here forever.”

Having interviewed hundreds of architects, interior designers, and contractors, Page Glatt has a profound understanding of all of the individual aspects that need to come together to create a home. One may desire the shingle-style home on the exterior, while on the interior wish to have all of the modern styles, like the open concept layout and double-height foyer, you would not traditionally find in an older home.

The modern home has also had a strong presence on the East End. “There is also an abundance of beautiful modern homes featuring strong linear lines, organic roots and curated space to optimize the natural surroundings,” Page Glatt explains. “The latest style I’ve seen a resurgence is an updated farmhouse. Painted white shingles with black window frames are a gorgeous take on a modern farmhouse. They are all gorgeous!”

Through Page Glatt’s work, one can see a range of styles from classic sophistication to modern elegance utilizing a range of colors and styles. Neutral tones in white, cream and gray may be accented by bold shades of deep navy and black, with natural elements mixed in like wood among softer textures in a modern setting. A dining room with layers of textures from the walls to an area rug, and different types of covered seating to levels of lighting spark interest in a room that highlights both form and function. There are also coveted traditional interiors that speak to the classic Hamptons look.

While interior designers often have their own personal styles they enjoy, it is essential to the client to have their own vision come through in living spaces. Page Glatt is more transitional and often works with modern clients, though it is important to listen to what it is the client needs. It is this ideology that has allowed Barbara Page Home to find great success in designing high-end residential interiors for clients in New York City, the Hamptons, Connecticut, Westchester County and Palm Beach.
