A chair is a chair is a chair. Not necessarily so when it was designed by the legendary Charles Eames and his wife Ray Eames for the Herman Miller Company. The lounge chair, a modern take on a 19th century English club chair, is the most coveted and recognizable classic after 50 years. You see it in chic real estate ads, on Instagram, on Frasier reruns. But their other chairs had staying power too and are available in new interpretations from Herman Miller and Hay, a Danish design brand.

Herman Miller X Hay Eames Recycled Molded Plastic Armchair Charles and Ray Eames adapted molding techniques developed during World War II to produce their classic molded plastic shell chair’s simple, gracious form, a design from 1950. $495 store.moma.org
Herman Miller x Hay Eames Compact Sofa The Compact Sofa was inspired by a built-in that Charles and Ray Eames created for their home in Pacific Palisades, California in 1954. With plush foam cushions supported by resilient webbing, it offers firm but flexible support. This famous couch is offered in a special reissue of Alexander Girard’s colorfully striped Jacob’s Coat textile, a design from 1959.

Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman in All Grain Leather Introduced in 1956, it became one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. The supple leather, according to Eames, was meant to mimic “the warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.”
